About Beyond the Cage

Beyond the Cage is a New Haven-based, collaboratively-made, digital archive of life stories told by formerly incarcerated people and their families.

Many of our interviewers and project team members have spent time incarcerated and all of us have loved ones who have been touched by the system in some way. Each of us believes in pushing for the end of mass incarceration, a large network of institutions of which we are all a part.

Because our interviewers work hard to provide narrators with authority over how their stories get told, contributors have the freedom to relate their experiences in their own way, and they can claim doing so as a form of resistance to discourses promoted by state and carceral authority.

Stories about the carceral system's impact on life before, during, and after release from prison can share knowledge about the harms of mass incarceration and shed light on ways to dismantle it.
